SIGMA Firmware Update

SIGMA SD1 Merrill Firmware is now available to download.
The firmware is a program which runs inside the camera and controls its operation.

Who can download and update

For customers using Sigma's SD1 Merrill
* Please note; this firmware cannot be used with the SD9, SD10, SD14, SD15 and SD1.

New camera firmware update now available for download

  • SIGMA SD1 Merrill Firmware Ver.1.09

This firmware update should be applied to any SD1 Merrill camera that has firmware “Ver.1.08” or lower.
* If your camera already has firmware“Ver.1.09”, you do not need this update.

Benefits of this firmware update.

Ver. 1.09

  • Accuracy of Auto Focus is improved by enhancement of the algorithm.

Ver. 1.08

  • It improves the speed of displaying a quick preview image after taking it in RAW or RAW + JPEG.
  • It corrects the phenomenon that Auto Bracketing in manual exposure mode may not work properly.

Ver. 1.07

  • It corrects the phenomenon that it occasionally has some noise around the blown out highlights in the image.

Ver. 1.06

  • When it is used with the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM, it refines the colors in peripheral areas of the images taken at or around aperture of F1.8.

Ver. 1.05

  • It is possible to create B/W images in RAW or RAW+JPEG mode.
  • It has refined the AF algorithm and improved the AF operation accordingly. It is especially effective for those lenses from our new product lines; Art, Contemporary and Sports.
  • It has improved the accuracy of flash light control of the built-in flash, ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-610 DG SUPER SA-STTL, ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-610 DG ST SA-STTL and ELECTRONIC FLASH MACRO EM-140 DG SA-STTL.
  • It enables the Custom Mode to save the shutter speed and the aperture value of manual exposure.
  • It corrects the phenomenon that the operation of the camera very occasionally becomes unstable when the battery is low.
  • It happened only when the exposure information in the display disappears after restarting from Auto-power off. It corrects the rare phenomenon that the AF button does not work in case it is the first button pressed after restarting the camera operation from Auto-power off.
  • It corrects the rare phenomenon that the lens ID is not recognized properly. It is reported only with some lenses from the new product line; Art, Contemporary and Sports.
  • It corrects the phenomenon that the user selects "Camera Control" in the "USB Mode", and then goes on to set "Continue" in the "Setting of AEL button" but the setting gets cancelled.

Ver. 1.04

  • Accuracy of Auto Focus is improved by enhancement of the algorithm.
  • Enables the setting of the ISO Sensitivity in steps of 1/3 EV.
  • Enables the setting of the Lower limit and Upper limit of the ISO Sensitivity in ISO Auto mode.
  • Adds “FOV Classic Blue” to Color mode.
  • Enables the Quick Set menu items to be changed using the A-dial or S-dial.

Ver. 1.03

  • Improved accuracy with evaluative exposure metering.

Ver. 1.02

  • Improved start-up speed.
  • Allows a dedicated external flashgun to be used in manual mode whilst the camera is in mirror up mode.
  • The phenomenon of the LCD display showing minor fuzziness immediately after start-up is corrected.
  • Various bugs have been corrected to achieve more stable operation.

  • Accuracy of Auto Focus is improved.
  • Accuracy of flashgun light control is improved.

How to check the current firmware version

STEP 01

Turn on the camera.

STEP 02

Press the MENU button on the back of the camera to display the Camera Set-up Menu.

STEP 03

Select “Firmware Update” from the Set-up Menu.
The installed firmware information is displayed.
If the version is “Ver.1.08” or lower, it is necessary to update to this new firmware version.

Caution (Firmware update)

If the camera is turned off during the update procedure, it might cause a malfunction and damage your camera.
To avoid causing a malfunction, please read the following carefully before updating the firmware.

  • Please use a dedicated AC adapter or a fully charged battery.
  • Do not open the BATTERY/CARD COVER or operate the camera during the firmware update.
  • Do not turn off the camera during the firmware update.

How to update the firmware

STEP 01

Please use 512MB or larger CF card and format the card in the camera body.
* To avoid loss of your important data, please check the CF card before formatting

STEP 02

Please connect a card reader containing the CF card or the SD1 Merrill to your computer and click the Download button or right click on the mouse (if you use a Macintosh computer, please press Control + click) to store the firmware file in the CF card root directory (Please do not store the file in a subfolder such as “DCIM”).
* If the firmware has downloaded whilst the camera is connected to your computer, please turn off your camera before disconnecting it from your computer.

STEP 03

Insert the CF card stored the “SD1M_109.BIN” file into your camera and turn on the SD1 Merrill.
* It is not necessary to connect the camera body to your computer.

STEP 04

Press the MENU button on the back of the camera to display the Camera Set-up Menu.

STEP 05

Select “Firmware” from Set-Up Menu.Press the OK button again to display the firmware update window.

STEP 06

Press the OK button to start the firmware update.

STEP 07

“Start Firmware update?” message will be displayed.

In case of “Start Firmware Update” message is not displayed

In the unlikely event that the “Start Firmware update” message does not appear, an error message will be displayed in the lower part of display.
A list of possible reasons for this error message, along with the solutions, appear below.

Error Message

No Firmware update file on Memory card

Solution

It is possible that the Firmware update file is not stored in the root directory. Please repeat the above installation from STEP 02.

Error Message

Cannot update firmware!
Battery Empty.

Solution

Please use a dedicated fully charged battery and repeat the above installation from STEP : 03.

STEP 08

Press the OK button again to start the firmware update. (It takes about a 3 minutes to update.)

Error!

If the “Firmware update is failed!” message appears during firmware updating, please check the following Error Code table. Please turn off the camera and repeat the above installation from STEP 01. If it is not possible to update by following "Solution", please visit the following technical support page for our World Network contact details.

Error Code Details of Error Solution
A005 The battery power is insufficient. Please use a dedicated fully charged battery and repeat the above installation from STEP 03.
A006 AV cable is connected. Turn off the camera power and remove the AV cable from your camera. Please repeat above installation from STEP 03.
A007 USB cable is connected. Turn off the camera power and remove the USB cable from your camera. Please repeat above installation from STEP 03.

Step 9

When the “Firmware update is complete. The camera will restart automatically.” Is displayed, the update is complete.
* Please do not operate the camera until “Firmware update is completed” is displayed.

Step 10

Select “Firmware” from the Set Up menu and select ‘Current Version’ to confirm the firmware has updated to “Ver.1.09”. If “Ver.1.09” is displayed, the update is complete.
